Portato
Portato is a GUI for the package manager of Gentoo and Sabayon - Portage. It is written in Python and uses the GTK+-frontend to render the windows. Have a look at the screenshots :)
Current version: 0.13
IMPORTANT: Portato needs a second or third developer. I currently (and probably on the long run too) cannot deal with everything that needs to be done. Portage evolves too fast :(
Installing
Normally, you should be able to install Portato just by entering emerge -av portato.
If you want to install a version, which is not in portage, or the live version, you must add the overlay first via layman:
layman -o http://portato.sourceforge.net/layman.xml -f -a portato emerge -av portato
Translating
There exists a translating guide, if you want to translate Portato to your preferred languages. Currently existing are: English, German, Polish, Catalan, and Turkish.
User documentation
There is no user documentation yet. Feel free to write something.
Plugins
Portato supports plugins. Please see the documentation installed along with Portato until I write something here =).
Similar projects
Of course there are similar projects which also offer a GUI. The ones I currently know of are:
- Himerge - a frontend written in Haskell (yeah ;P).
- Kuroo - a frontend especially aimed for the KDE environment. (Development seems to have stopped)
- Porthole - also written in Python and using GTK+. This frontend inspired me to do my own ;).
Contact
You can contact me (Necoro) via email: portato(the-at)necoro(the-dot)net You might also want to look if someone is available in #portato@FreeNode in IRC.
If you are using Gentoo look into this forum thread (engl) or into the German one. If you are using Sabayon, use this one.
There is a small and only recently starting blog of me under http://necoro.wordpress.com. One of the main topics is Portato - so if you are interested: Have a look.
